“I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream,” he said.

Quan won the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

“My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage,” he said.

As a kid, Quan moved from Vietnam to Hong Kong as a refugee, then settled in the U.S., where he got an audition to play Chinese pickpocket Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984 and gadget-loving Data in The Goonies in 1985.

And he made his comeback this year with his first Oscars win as a 51-year-old man.

“Dreams are something you have to believe in. I almost gave up on mine,” Quan said.

“To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive!” he added, “Thank you so much for welcoming me back. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”
