Mississippi Boy, 4, Melts Hearts by Dressing as His Hero: The School Janitor

In a world telling kids to be famous influencers or movie stars, a 4-year-old boy in Mississippi is melting hearts across the internet for choosing a different kind of hero: a humble servant of God.

When the preschoolers at First Baptist Church Clinton were asked to dress up for “What You Want To Be When You Grow Up” day, teachers might have expected a classroom full of astronauts and superheroes.

Instead, one little boy walked in wearing a red shirt, a heavy tool belt, and—the finishing touch—a bald cap.

He didn’t want to be Superman. He wanted to be “Mr. Bubba.”

Bubba Cagle, the church’s beloved facilities manager, is the man who fixes the leaks, high-fives the students, and keeps the school running. To the adults, he’s a hard worker. To this little boy, he is larger than life.

The video and side-by-side photo of the pair—the 4-year-old looking up adoringly at the smiling handyman—has gone viral, proving that children notice those who serve with kindness.

“It’s just a surprise that anyone would even look up to me like that. I’m just an average Joe here,” Cagle, visibly moved, told the Baptist Press. “But to me, there’s no more honest person than a child.”

But it was Mr. Bubba’s reaction to the viral fame that truly revealed his character. He didn’t take credit for being a “hero.” Instead, the grandfather of four pointed the glory right back to God.

When asked what he wants for the students he serves every day, his wish was simple:

“I just hope that they grow up and follow the Lord and do good things in life.”

We often worry about who our children are looking up to in today’s culture. This story is a beautiful reminder that if you serve with love and humility, you might just become a hero to the next generation.

We need more Mr. Bubbas in our schools—and more hearts like this little boy’s.
