A heroic Memphis police officer is crediting the Holy Spirit for leading her to save a teenager from jumping off a bridge over the Mississippi river.
Officer Tina Shaw, a 15-year veteran on the department’s Crisis Intervention Team, was dispatched to help the 17-year-old boy on I-40 while a large portion of the Memphis Police Department was responding to an officer-involved shooting Thursday.
“The Spirit led me to go ahead,” Shaw told WREG. “This is one of the reasons why I’m also a police officer. To help people who are suicidal, mentally ill, whether it’s ADHD, suicide or bipolar schizophrenic situations.”
She said it took 15 minutes to convince the young father not to jump.
“I said, ‘Son…it’s going to be okay, God gonna get you through this,’” Shaw told the station. “It’s gona be okay and he was crying, and I shed a few tears.”

The officer, a mother of two young sons, said she could see the pain in his eyes and told him that his son needs him.
“We just immediately hugged each other,” she added. “It was the best feeling in the world. Despite all the negativity, there are quite a bit of officers on this department that are great.”
The teen was reunited with his family and sent to a facility to get help.
