ICE Agent Hugs Protester: ‘We Have a Heart’

A brief exchange outside a Minneapolis ICE facility is resonating far beyond the protest lines.

A short video showing a federal immigration agent hugging an anti-ICE protester outside an immigration facility in Minneapolis has gone viral — not because of confrontation, but because of compassion.

The moment was captured by independent journalist Brendan Gutenschwager (@BGOnTheScene), who was on the ground documenting protests outside a facility operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In the video, a Border Patrol agent steps out of formation to hug a female protester after the two discover they share something in common: they were both veterans from Puerto Rico. What follows is an unexpected and deeply human exchange.

“I love you,” the agent tells the protester, laughing. “I want to give you a hug.”

“You can’t,” she responds, glancing at the other agents nearby.

“I could,” the agent replies, adding that it wouldn’t bother him.

“I would let you,” she says. “You can hug me. I would embrace it if you would hug me.”

“I will,” the agent responds. “Come over.”

As the two embrace, the agent adds a simple explanation that would soon echo across social media: “We have a heart, you know what I mean.”

The clip quickly spread online, striking a chord with viewers across the political spectrum. For many, it offered a reminder that even in the most heated policy debates, moments of dignity and empathy can still break through.

In response to the viral video, the Department of Homeland Security emphasized the human toll faced by federal officers on the front lines.

“Despite the rhetoric we see from sanctuary politicians and the media, our officers are fathers and mothers, sons and daughters,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Newsweek. “They get up every morning to try and make our communities safer and enforce the laws on the books.

“They should not have to face rampant assaults and death threats against them,” McLaughlin added. “We hope more individuals will thank our officers for risking their lives to protect Americans. Pray for peace.”

Immigration enforcement remains one of the most polarizing issues in the country, and moments like this do not resolve deep policy disagreements. But for many watching the video, the hug stood as a quiet reminder that enforcing the law and showing compassion are not mutually exclusive.

In a climate often defined by anger and division, the exchange outside the Minneapolis ICE facility offered something rare: a moment of shared humanity — unscripted, imperfect, and real.

Sometimes, the smallest gestures speak the loudest.
