‘Jesus Revolution’ Director Makes History With New Faith-Based Film on Revival

Jon Erwin made history with the release of “Jesus Revolution,” a film based on the revival that took place in the 1970s.

The Christian filmmaker became the first director to receive four A+ CinemaScore Grades since the company started releasing the results in 1986.

Erwin made perfect scores with “Woodlawn,” “I Can Only Imagine,” and “American Underdog,” which he directed with his brother, Andrew Erwin.

“Jesus Revolution,” which stars Kelsey Grammer from “Frasier” and Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in “The Chosen” series, finished No. 3 at the box office over the weekend, raking in an estimated $15.5 million, more than double the original estimates.

The film went to theaters the day after the historic student-led Asbury University revival services “officially” ended, though similar outpourings of the Holy Spirit at out at reportedly more than 21 campuses.

Roumie, who plays the hippie-turned-street preacher Lonnie Frisbee, said the timing of the film’s release is “no coincidence.”

Roumie told CBN News, “The popularity of ‘The Chosen,’ its success in theaters in the release last month, the release of this film on the heels of this week-plus-long prayer service, thousands of people showing up at Asbury University, I don’t think anything is coincidental or done by chance or happenstance.”

“I think God has a purpose in everything that He does,” he continued, “and I think this is a moment where the culture is being reactivated to welcome Him back into the culture on a massive scale, potentially a global scale.”
