As Christians in Afghanistan face a dire situation with the Taliban’s insurrection after the withdrawal of U.S. troops, believers around the world are praying.
Phil King, a worship pastor and songwriter in residence at Gateway Church in Texas, is one of them. He started getting messages from friends involved in missions in the Middle East, like Robby Dawkins, with desperation and helplessness.
One message read: “The Taliban is sending the messages to us ‘We know where you are and we are coming for you.'”
Another read: “The Taliban is going door to door and our house is full of Bibles and other Christian books…”
While traveling home on a plane, King wrote the song “Pray for the Saints,” a song dedicated to believers in Afghanistan.
“I knew it needed to get in the hands of missionaries to be sent out to the Church in Afghanistan to encourage them as they face the realities of taking a stand or escaping and to the global Church to bring awareness and cause us to call out and pray and respond however we are able,” King told me.
Believers fleeing Afghanistan have already been listening to the song.
He hopes it leads to more prayer for Afghanistan, as evangelical leaders like Franklin Graham and Sean Feucht are calling on churches to dedicate time to pray Sunday.
“We must pray for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan,” King said. “For many of them, this is it.”
He said it reminds him of a friend’s song about persecution: “The Church in Afghanistan is now being ‘faced with the test we would all hope to pass, but none of us would want to take.'”
