WATCH: ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ Player Mai Prays Before Final Game

After defeating more than 450+ players, the finalists in “Squid Game: The Challenge” on Netflix prayed together.

Mai Whelan AKA “Player 287,” who is a Vietnamese immigrant to the U.S., prayed the Lord’s prayer out loud before she entered the match with her opponent, Phill Cain, a Brazilian-American scuba instructor in Hawaii.

I have to give Netflix credit for airing the 14-second prayer Mai whispered in its entirety — especially given the massive audience that watches this new reality show based on one of the most popular shows in the world.

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us,

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.”

The final game was a round of “rock, paper, scissors.” Each time a player won, they got to pick up a key from a box littered with keys and see if it would open the lock.

Mai won the $4.56 million. (I was Team Mai as soon as we started to get to know her. She’s a true fighter!)

“Today, just validate that anything is possible,” she said upon winning.

According to her Netflix profile, Mai is 55 years old, from Virginia and plans to spend her winnings on a retirement home. But throughout the episodes, we learned that she is now an immigration adjudicator who left Vietnam when she was just eight years old, during the Fall of Saigon in 1975. She shared about an intense encounter she had with a soldier in a killing field where her mom saved her. Mai joined the Navy, became a single mother at 19, and then a grandparent.

“Even when you feel down and afraid, you have to pick yourself up, be strong and focus,” Mai said.

The show ended with a challenge to viewers.
