‘SHINE MY LIGHT’: Mike Posner Releases POWERFUL Remake Of ‘Ibiza’ Hit, Points To God In Recovery

Posted on March 31, 2026March 31, 2026 By Caleb Parke

More than a decade after his global hit “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” Mike Posner is revisiting the song with a completely different message.

His new track, “I Went Back to Ibiza,” reflects on sobriety, faith, and what he calls a full life transformation.

“On my 26th birthday, I wrote, ‘I Took A Pill in Ibiza.’ It was a sad but honest song about the state of my life,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “Twelve years later, I feel proud to look at the lyrics of THAT song and know that NONE of them are true anymore. I’ve grown into a completely new man…one that I’m proud of.”

FROM “SAD SONGS” TO “LOVE SONGS”

The original 2015 hit captured the emptiness behind fame, addiction, and partying.

Now, Posner says his life tells a different story.

In the remake, he sings:

“Now I really wanna live my life, now I really wanna shine my light.”

He also flips one of the most recognizable lines from the original:

Then: “All I know are sad songs”
Now: “All I know are love songs”

“GOD’S GOT MY BACK”

Posner does not shy away from his faith in the new version. He says that almost cost him industry support.

“I sent it to a lot of different people. Some of them said they wouldn’t do it unless I took the parts about God out,” he said.

“I said I’m not going to do that.”

That is when David Guetta stepped in.

“He heard it and just did it immediately,” Posner said.

A STORY OF SURVIVAL AND SOBRIETY

Now more than a decade removed from the lifestyle he once wrote about, Posner says he is “10 years sober” and in a completely different place. He has also moved out of Los Angeles and is starting a family.

His new lyrics reflect that ongoing battle:

“The fame and the money and the ghost of my twenties
Try to make me who I used to be
But God’s got my back”

He also references the loss of his friend, late DJ Avicii, a moment many fans have called emotional.

“A VEHICLE FOR TRANSFORMATION”

Posner says the song is more than a remake. It is a message.

“This song is the soundtrack to my personal transformation,” he wrote. “I hope it becomes the soundtrack to others coming closer to faith, love, and the life they deserve.”

He added:

“If you’re going through some version of suffering, keep going. You might be amazed at who you become.”

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HIT

What was once a song about escape is now a testimony of redemption.

And for Posner, the mission is clear:

“Now I really wanna shine my light.”
