JESUS IN JAIL: Michigan Inmates Join Hands in Viral ‘Lord’s Prayer’ Moment

Posted on December 29, 2025December 29, 2025 By Caleb Parke

In a place often defined by past mistakes and heavy consequences, a powerful scene of hope unfolded this Christmas Eve inside the Genesee County Jail in Michigan.

Sheriff Christopher Swanson, who has long advocated for “culture change” within the correctional system, shared a rare piece of surveillance footage that is now touching hearts across the country.

The video shows inmates in one of the jail’s largest pods coming together—without any prompting or direction from staff—to join hands and recite the Lord’s Prayer together.

“I’ve NEVER posted a jail surveillance video like this one,” Sheriff Swanson shared on social media. “Last night on Christmas Eve, inmates… came together on their own. No direction. No prompting. They joined hands and quietly recited the Lord’s Prayer.”

The Sheriff noted that this kind of organic unity is a sign that the cycle of “generational incarceration” can be broken.

“In a place that’s often defined by mistakes and consequences, I saw unity and hope,” Swanson continued. “I saw people choosing something better for themselves and for each other. This is what real culture change looks like, and it doesn’t happen overnight.”

Under Swanson’s leadership, the Genesee County Jail has focused on programs like I.G.N.I.T.E. (Inmate Growth Naturally and Intentionally Through Education), which aims to release “better people, not just better inmates.”

As the year comes to a close, this viral moment serves as a powerful reminder that no one is beyond the reach of grace and that peace can be found in the most unlikely places.
