A Good Samaritan in O’ahu, Hawaii rescued a newborn baby girl after her mother dumped the infant in a trash can, according to the local news.
The Kahala resident, who wished to remain anonymous, heard a homeless woman giving birth outside his window in the Honolulu neighborhood. He immediately called 9-1-1, but was overcome with emotion when he saw her drop the baby in his trash bin.
“I broke down a little bit and started crying because I didn’t know how someone could just leave their kid like that,” he told KHON 2 News.
He said he was able to grab the innocent baby girl from top of the trash heap and didn’t think the little one was injured.
“It was crying when I took it out of the dumpster, which is a good sign,” he said.
The Good Samaritan held her until the ambulance arrived.
“I’m grateful to God that I was here home when this all happened so that I was able to get the kid in time to save its life,” the Good Samaritan said. “It could have turned out very different if I didn’t hear the screams and I wasn’t home.”
The baby is reportedly in stable condition and a child abandonment case has been opened as the mother has not been identified.

State Rep. John Mizuno, who introduced the “Safe Haven” law in the Aloha State in 2007, said it could’ve been avoided.
“It’s to save newborn babies from abandonment,” Mizuno told KHON 2. “If that young girl knew about the law, she could’ve had the baby at the Queen’s Medical Center, a hospital, and relinquished the baby right after birth and there would’ve been no criminal charges at all.”
