MIRACLE: Good Samaritans Rescue Man Trapped in Crashed Truck for 6 Days

Matthew Reum, 27, of Mishawaka, Indiana was miraculously rescued by two Good Samaritans who found him trapped inside his mashed and mangled truck underneath a bridge.

State police said Reum somehow managed to drive off I-94 and into the bed of Salt Creek – leaving him all alone and locked in place, surviving by drinking rainwater for six days. His phone was just out of reach.

“It’s a miracle that he’s alive in this weather,” Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield told reporters, adding he suffered “severe, potentially life-threatening injuries.”

Mario Garcia and his son-in-law Nivardo Delatorre were on a fishing expedition when they saw something shiny in the distance. When they discovered the car they decided to investigate but when he saw the body, he expected him to be dead.

Delatorre quickly called 9-1-1 and told Reum: “They’re on their way, buddy! They’re on their way!”

Matt Ortiz, a friend of Reum’s who knows Garcia, told ABC 7 Chicago “it was definitely God that brought him to the right place.”

Reum was able to give a thumbs up and a smile from his hospital bed. He has several broken bones and doctors had to amputate his left leg below his knee.

Haley Traxler, one of Reum’s friends, started a GoFundMe to help with his medical bills amid his lengthy recovery.

“He works for the Boilermakers union 374 out of Hobart but lives in south bend IN. If you can help out in any way it would be greatly appreciated,” Traxler said. “Matt is thankful for anyone who can contribute.”

After quickly surpassing the goal of $25,000, it was changed to $80,000.

Brad Sievers, the business manager of Reum’s labor union, posted a message of support.

“Since I have known Matt, he has always been a positive, kind, and energetic person. We will continue to pray and support our brother as he begins his recovery,” Sievers added. “We thank God that Matt is still with us.”
