A soldier in Georgia credited his basic training with saving family members from drowning.
Matthew Cole, a Fort Moore soldier, saved a father and his 3-year-old daughter near the Georgia Power dam between Lake Oliver and the Chattahoochee River.
After the dam opened its gates, the dad and daughter were almost swept away, but for Cole’s intervention.
According to the local news, Cole hopped over the safety railing and pulled them both from the rocks and water one by one before Columbus Fire and EMS Water Rescue arrived to help additional family members make it safely to land.
“I was just happy that I was there. You know, if I wasn’t there, these guys are good (Columbus Fire & EMS Water Rescue), but if they would have gotten swept away, I don’t know if they would have gotten there in time, so I’m just glad I was there,” Cole told WRBL.
